Contrary to what you might think, you probably won't get a dreaded lurgy when you're abroad -- if you take a few sensible precautions.  It's one are where you're definitely in control of your own destiny.

Most of the problems you're likely to encounter stem from one of several problem areas:

  • insect-borne diseases
  • food & water-borne diseases
  • invasion by insects or other creatures

Now, if you take some sensible precautions, you can just about be sure sure of preventing all of these.  Of course, there is a remote chance of getting some other communicable disease, but these tend to be uncommon.

In this health section you can find information about some of the diseases you hopefully won't catch, ways to prevent catching anything, plus specific information about women's health issues, health insurance, etc.
